Biomethane use to enable the renewable energy transition

The increased use of biomethane as a fuel offers enormous potential throughout Europe for more climate protection and less air pollution on the road. However, only a small part of the potential is used so far. “Bureaucratic hurdles and a lack of political will have slowed biomethane use in transportation sector. The German implementation of EU law for the promotion of advanced biofuels as well as the reform of the European Union’s Renewable Energies Directive now offer the opportunity to use the fuel from environmentally friendly biogas plants in vehicles” explains Managing Director of the German Biogas Association, Dr. Claudius da Costa Gomez, on the International Transport Forum and its Ministerial Conference held in Leipzig. Session of joint working group on Hungarian biomethane registry

The representatives of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority and the Hungarian Biogas Association had the next session of the joint working group in Budapest on the 9th May, 2017. The meeting was also attended by the representatives of the Hungarian Natural Gas Vehicle Association.

The working group discussed the proposal elaborated by the Hungarian Biogas Association and agreed on the next steps:

  • the verification of sustainability for biomethane consignments used as vehicle fuel must be given special attention to enable counting such usage consumption towards the biofuel targets of Hungary,
  • an impact assessment, focused on the potential and feasibility is necessary to provide adequate background information to authorities involved.

National Biomethane Workshop in Hungary

Joint forces of elNa and AGCS agree for information exchange on the Austrian biomethane register

Part of the national implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EG) related to sustainability of biomass is to be found in the regulation on agricultural feedstocks for renewable fuels and liquid renewable fuels (250.VO/2010) and in the fuel directive 2012. The fuel directive empowers the Federal Agency for Environment with the operation of the national biofuel (elNA) register.

Double counting of biomethane has to be avoided and thus elNa and the Austrian Biomethane Register, operated by AGCS, have joined forces. They have planned to establish information exchange on biomethane production/injection and use. This cooperation will make sure to avoid double-counting of biomethane in Austria.
