There is a theoretical potential of 8 billion m3 per year of biomethane, according to CIB.
Lorenzo Maggioni, Head of R&D at CIB talks about the latest position paper which shows the potential of biomethane in Italy. He says that the number of 8 billion m3 encompasses all the biomasses available in Italy and therefore it would be hard to reach, while: ‘if we convert all plants currently in operation, we would be able to produce something like 3 billion m3 of biomethane. So, in terms of potential, it’s huge.’
Mr Maggioni points out that the main problems preventing the advancement of biomethane sector are of bureaucratic, legal and regulatory nature.
